Of the sin of love she swore never to see the object of her desires again. Although the outrageous fiction wounded the pride of the Duchess of Langeais, the look of her mysterious savior had remained imprinted on her soul; but when she learned that the liberator was Montreveaux; that the man who implored her love hour after hour, was part of the sect of the masked men who inflicted the unpardonable offense on her, she believed she hated him with all her soul.
