Jean Soreau, autrefois violoniste, avait édifié sa maison solitaire sur le rives du grand ffeuve. Marie, sa femme, d'une rare beauté, était l'âme de ce foyer modeste. Ce soir-là, près de l'âtre, ils évoquaient leurs souvenirs : Jean Soreau égrenait sous l'archet les notes d'une valse lègére. Ils voyaient la soiree, tumultueuse qui, pour toujours, avait lie leurs destins, la nuit de fête au " Signe du Loup ", Francois Bréault voilait imposer son brutal amour à la pauvre danseuse qu'était alors Marie. Jean Soreau, François Bréault, a Royal Mail postman, was fatally hit by an unknown gunman's bullet. In a last exertion of energy, he traced this name: Jean Soreau. On the body of Bréault, police found the slip (of paper). The corporal John Black began investigating in the country. Jean Soreau, a former violinist, had built his lonely house on the shores of a great river. Mary, his wife of rare beauty, was the soul of this modest home. That evening, near the hearth, they evoked their memories: Jean Soreau loosely played a light Waltz on his violin. They remembered the tumultuous evening that always had bound their destinies -- the night of partying at the "Sign of the Wolf". La vision s'effaçait et le jour suivant, lendemain de la mort de François Bréault, Jean Soreau se rendait aux missions vendre ses fourrures. Le Caporal Black, conduit par Pierson, le frère de Marie, arrivaient à quelques milles de l'habitation. Tout a coup il fut ébloui par la beauté de Marie et le mauvais désir envahit son cerveau. Black feignit être blessé. Il usait de toutes les ruses, de toutes les violences que lui suggérait son désir effréné. Cependant Pierson seul dans la forêt, en son âme acsible à toutes les superstitieuses terreurs, était le jouet d'une terrible hallucination : Le spectre de François Bréault le poursuivant menaçant. Au train furieux de son attelage, Pierson fuyait à travers plaines et forets vers Artic-City. Il avouait son crime. Il avait tué Breault, pour venger sa sœur. Jean Soreau ignorait les événements et confiant il regagnait sa demeure. Le caporal Black l'arrêtait aussitôt et proposait à Marie la liberté de son époux contre le don de sa beauté. Dans sa subtile simplicité, la jeune femme usait de sa dernière arme. Elle enivrait le Caporal et Jean gagnait la forêt. Black se lançait à sa poursuite. Il faisait feu sur une ombre. La riposte le couchait sanglant. L'homme qui avait atteint Black était le chef de Police d'Artic-City venu pour donner l'ordre de relâcher Soreau et dans les ténèbres Black, sous l'influence de l'ivresse, l'avait attaqué croyant tirer sur le fugitif. The cabaret violinist intervened. The master of the place was looking for the musician Jean Soreau and the dancer Marie, but they were gone. The vision faded and the next day, after the death of François Bréault, Jean Soreau went to missions to sell his furs. The Corporal Black, led by Pierson, the brother of Marie, arrived a few miles from the house. Suddenly he was dazzled by the beauty of Mary and a bad desire invaded his brain. Black feigned being injured. He used all the tricks and all the violence suggested to him by his unbridled desire. However,  Pierson alone in the forest, his soul succeptable to all the superstitious terrors, was the victim of a terrible hallucination: the vision of François Bréault the threatening prosecution. The furious train of his team, Pierson fled through the plains and forests to Artic-City. He confessed his crime. He had killed Breault, to avenge his sister. Jean Soreau was unaware of these events and he confidently returned to his home. Corporal Black stopped immediately and proposed to Mary the freedom of her husband against the gift of beauty. In its subtle simplicity, the young woman used his last weapon. The corporal and Jean won the forest. Black started in pursuit. It was shot at a shadow. The result was a bloody lie. The man who had reached Black was the Chief of Police of Artic-City, who had come to give the order to release Soreau. and Black, under the influence of drink, had attacked and believed he shot the fugitive.
